Work placement, Cauterets, Pyrennes - waiter - summer 2007
I am really grateful to the Boost your French organisation for the brilliant opportunity they offer to be able to put your French in practise outside of the classroom. I worked in Cauterets this summer for six weeks in the Pyrennees as a waiter, and I also helped out with the cleaning in a beautiful holiday village, called les Marronniers. I study modern languages at Southampton university, where I first found out about Catherine's work, and it seemed like it'd be the perfect chance to improve my French, but when I got there I found that I didn't just improve my French, but you learn people skills, I learnt a lot about the French culture and cuisine. Furthermore, having never done any waitressing before I learned so much about the tourism and gastronomical industries. I've made some life long friends, who I've stayed in contact with.
Catherine was there for me every step of the way if I had any questions, and my manager also made sure that I was getting along well, he's had a lot of experience working with people from all over the world so he was very professional.
As it relates my level of French, I learned so much vocabulary in such a short space of time, cause you can use it on a daily basis, and by listening to the natives, you pick up common expressions which was really interesting.

Winter 2007 - work placement - playworker, French holiday village, Alps
VALVVF est une entreprise vraiment connue en France, il y a 108 villages de vacances qui se trouvent partout en France. Alors la clientèle est presque complètement française. J'ai rencontré une famille russe pendant mon stage. A part ça, il n'y avait que des français.
J'étais animatrice, alors j'ai travaillé 5 jours par semaine, de 9h.00 â 12.00 et de 14.00 â 17.00, avec des enfants de 2 â 6 ans. On faisait des activités manuelles le matin, et l'après midi, on sortait, se promenait si le temps le permettait. Je faisais aussi partie de l'équipe d'animation générale. On faisait un spectacle tous les vendredis et dimanches. J'étais actrice et danseuse, ce qui m'a beaucoup plu.
La nourriture était parfaite. Le logement était un peu serré mais je me suis débrouillée.
Je m'entendais très bien avec mes collègues, je sais déjà qu'on va rester en contact à l'avenir, à long terme. L'une d'entre elles est devenue ma meilleure amie.

I was initially a little apprehensive about my Stage in a youth hostel in Serre Chevalier since I had not really travelled anywhere alone before. However, I was greeted at the station by a very friendly and very French employer, which filled me with the hope of having an enjoyable and productive stay. Then I was blown away by the beauty of the mountains in Summer! I was immediately accepted into the working group in the hostel with whom I could chat and joke as well as work. They were careful to show me exactly what needed to be done and ensure I didn't work over my allotted hours. My employer also helped me to get my bearings and feel more settled in the area in general, aiding me to make many friends. I recently had a phone call from a French woman I worked with, proving my French is still being improved even after leaving!

Mademoiselle Middleton s'est très vite adaptée à l'entreprise. Son enthousiasme et sa bonne humeur ont été les couleurs dominantes durant son séjour chez nous.
Elle s'est tout de suite investie dans les tâches qui lui ont été confiées et son travail a été irréprochable, de part sa qualité d'exécution que son esprit d'initiative. Son intégration au sein de l'équipe a été presque immédiate, et ses relations avec les autres membres du personnel excellentes
En arrivant à l'auberge, Francesca avait déjà un bon niveau de français, surtout en compréhension, après un mois de stage son français parlé s'est sensiblement amélioré.
